Tokyo Workshop - Spring 2026
25-31 March 2026
Spring in Tokyo!
Enjoy five and a half days and six nights getting the lowdown on Tokyo under the auspicious eye of photographer Meg Hewitt. Some highlights include Harajuku, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Kabukicho, Golden Gai, Ueno and Shimokitazawa.
Explore hidden laneways and enjoy the time-honored tradition of hanami under the cherry blossom trees. Embrace subcultures and the after-hours vibes of Shinjuku. Meet members of the Japanese photography community in a photography-themed bar. DIne in a photography book cafe. Just a few of the experiences that await as Meg introduces you to the Tokyo she knows & loves.
Over the five days (Thursday to Monday), you will create a body of images to express your time in the city. You will focus on shooting, editing and sequencing to crystallise your own style. There will be daily group and individual critiques and assistance with your equipment if needed. The week will culminate in a sequenced edit, which you will share with the group as a projection on the final night. The first evening, (Wednesday) we will do a group portfolio review and go out for dinner.
Price does not include travel Insurance, travel to the workshop, local travel, entry to bars or booze.
Check-in will start at 3 pm on the 25th of March, with a meetup at 4.30 pm followed by dinner, so please aim to arrive by then.
All workshop options include dinner on the first night at a fantastic Japanese restaurant and a lunch under the Spring cherry blossom - hanami.
The price is in Australian dollars. If you choose the ‘deposit to hold place’ option, I will contact you to confirm whether you require accommodation. I will be booking group accomodation once I get a sense of participants needs. I normally secure accomodation for a range of budgets from $1400 to whatever takes your fancy, if you would like a recommendation.
The proposed accommodation will be within walking distance of the workshop venue, Shinjuku Station and many fantastic photographic locations.
It is recommended to stay close to the workshop location to minimise daily travel time and get the most out of the experience. There will be a maximum of six participants in total.
SOME REVIEWS FROM PREVIOUS PARTICIPANTS
Beyond style, beyond technique, beyond craft: Meg Hewitt’s workshop – in fact, her work – is about VOICE.
If you’re seeking your own visual voice, join one of her workshops…as I did!!!
I had an awesome time in Tokyo and really enjoyed the workshop. Great to be pushed to do things a bit out of the comfort zone (ie approaching people directly) and take on new challenges in a new location. Really got a lot of inspiration and encouragement from you, Marco and all the participants - which was very motivating. It’s great to learn from people whose work I admire, as I find this always helps me get closer to where I want to be with my work. So thanks for everything!! I have a lot to take away and think about and work on.
Seriously one of the best trips of my life, I made so much good work. There are so many great places to hang out and photograph in Tokyo.
During the workshop we were given complete freedom and were encouraged to explore Tokyo and photograph as we felt compelled which I loved. Every day we had comprehensive reviews of our images and then went out to shoot. Over the course of the workshop we were encouraged to develop a series or narrative with our work. Meg knows Tokyo very well and was able to offer great suggestions of places to go to help us develop our story. I found the construction of a narrative quite challenging, but it was invaluable learning and experience, and now I am starting to think about developing narrative in my own work with the view of how it could be presented as a series of cohesive images. Both Meg and Marco are a creative force and this rubs of on everyone over the workshop. We had great fun exploring the small bars of Shinjuku, the streets of Harajuku, traditional Japanese food and were lucky to experience Hanami the Japanese way. Thank you Meg and Marco for a most special and memorable learning and life experience!
